Why Is My Air Conditioner Freezing Up?
Having your air conditioner break down is inconvenient, especially when needed most. A common problem is air conditioners freezing up, but there can be many causes of this issue. Always look for a reputable auto air conditioning repair to fix any problems you may have. Learn more about air conditioner freezing below.
Why Is the Air Conditioner Freezing?
Lack of airflow is the main culprit of your air conditioner freezing. There is lack of warm air blowing through the evaporator coil, and the refrigerant freezes in the evaporator coil or the line.
Clogged Air Filters
Changing your air conditioner is one of the easiest ways to prevent a breakdown. Dirty filters block airflow, and they can freeze your unit. Replace your filter often, especially during peak seasons.
Clogged Condensate Line
Blocked drain lines cause water to become trapped by the evaporator coil and freeze. The evaporator coil is needed to absorb warm air, but it cannot function properly when clogged.
Damaged Blower Fan
The blower fan is needed to push warm air toward the evaporator coils. A malfunctioning fan does not push warm air toward the coils, and they will eventually freeze. The broken coils will stop the air conditioner from functioning correctly.
Dirty Coil
Dirt can obstruct the coil and restrict airflow, causing it to freeze. Air that travels through the ducts carries dust and dirt. Filters catch much of the debris, but not all of it. The coil needs to be cleaned periodically. You should have regular Auto AC Repair done at least twice per year.
Low Refrigerant
Low amounts of refrigerant put a lot of pressure on the system, and the line can freeze. A leak can cause low pressure, and it needs to be addressed immediately.
Collapsed Air Ducts
Air needs properly working ducts to move through. Collapsed ducts prevent proper airflow, and they can cause your air conditioner to freeze up.
Frozen Air Conditioner? Now What?
If it’s too late, don’t panic. Try a couple of easy steps before calling a professional.
- Change the dirty air filter. Even a bit of dirt can obstruct the airflow, get onto the coils, and freeze the unit.
- Turn the air conditioner off and turn on the fan. It blows warm air onto the coils and defrosts the unit. Give the frozen evaporator coil time to defrost.
- Rerun the system, and keep an eye on it. If you see ice forming, turn it off to melt, and contact an HVAC technician as soon as possible.
Preventative maintenance is a proactive step to keep your air conditioner from freezing up.
