Spring is a great time to give your vehicle a little extra TLC. Whether you’re a do-it-yourselfer or you’re in need of professional assistance, we’ve put together a list of tips for preparing your vehicle for spring weather.

1. Clean the Interior

As the weather gets warmer, your car’s interior will become a magnet for debris like French fry boxes, Big Gulps, and more. That means it’s time to give your vehicle a thorough spring cleaning. Start by vacuuming the floors and floor mats to remove any dirt or grit trapped under them. Next, vacuum the dashboard and center console, as well as the door pockets and vents.

2. Check Your Tires

The tires on your vehicle play a big part in its safety and performance. Checking your tires regularly at auto repair shops can help you avoid a blowout or other tire-related issue. Most tires are equipped with “wear indicators” that are molded into the tread grooves. When these indicators become flush with the tire’s tread, it’s time to replace your tires.

3. Change Your Oil

Winter weather takes a toll on your car, and it’s essential to take steps to get it back in top shape before spring arrives. One of the best ways to do this is to change your oil. Not only will this help you keep your engine running properly, but it will also extend the life of your vehicle.

4. Change Your Wiper Blades

If you live in a climate with cold winters, your wiper blades can get pretty dull and clogged up over time. That’s why it’s a good idea to change them at least once every six months. Wiper blades attach to the wiper arm via a connector and come in various lengths. Make sure you choose the right one for your vehicle and follow the instructions in your manual to connect it properly.

5. Check Your Battery

The battery is one of the most important parts of your vehicle. Without it, your vehicle won’t start. Winter can be hard on batteries. Cold temperatures can reduce your battery’s charge by up to 60%. Your car will require more power in the winter, so make sure your battery has enough capacity to get started. And, it will need to withstand the parasitic demands from systems like the radio, heated seats and other electronic devices.

6. Top Off Your Fluids

During the winter months, the cold weather can take a toll on your car’s fluids. Now is the perfect time to top them off. This is often one of the first steps in preparing your vehicle for spring. Make sure to check your engine oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid (if you drive an automatic), coolant and power steering fluid.

7. Check Your Tire Pressure

Checking your tire pressure is a simple and cost-effective way to keep your vehicle running properly. Keeping your tires at the proper PSI can prevent problems from occurring, including uneven wear, gas mileage issues and underinflated tires that can damage your vehicle. Most vehicles have their recommended tire pressures printed on a sticker inside the driver’s door jamb or in the owner’s manual.
